If you sell online

Your product pages and our card maker

Every thing on a buildawall wall is a card. The card maker is the part of our server that opens a shop address and copies the product details onto it.

Make it skip your shop

Tell us your domain and a mailbox on it. We send that mailbox an email; its button opens a page here with one more button. Press that one, and from then on the card maker leaves every page and photo on the domain and its subdomains alone.

Mailbox somewhere else — a free email service, your agency? Send the form all the same. We read those requests ourselves and decide; the card maker keeps visiting while we do.

Something like yourbrand.example. www and every other subdomain come with it.

Ends in your domain, like hello@yourbrand.example? You get the email with the button. Any other mailbox: the request comes to us to look at first.

Optional, up to 800 characters. Useful if the mailbox isn’t on the shop’s domain: tell us who you are.

This request is kept apart from our visit statistics — no IP address is filed with it, and what travels with it is the domain, the mailbox and the note you write here.

What brings it to your pages

  • A person adds one of your products to their wall by pasting its address, or includes it in the batch of links handed to us while setting a wall up. The page is opened right then.
  • If a pasted link fails and that took 3 seconds or more, it is tried once more in the background straight after.
  • The owner of a card presses refresh on it.
  • Cards on public walls get their price and stock checked again, so their pages are reopened roughly once a day. Cards on private walls are never rechecked.
  • buildawall also suggests things on its own — a starter wall for a new account, or matches for things in a shelf photo someone uploads. For those it looks the item up in our directory of shops and opens the address the directory gives. Nobody pasted that address; we picked it.
  • Walls marked “buildawall edit” are put together by our team from product links we chose; their pages and photos are opened the same way.
  • If the same link was read successfully for the same country within the last 24 hours, the card is filled from that reading and your page isn’t opened again. Refresh and the price check always open it.

One visit, in detail

Request
A single GET for the page address. Nothing is submitted or clicked, and other links on the page aren’t followed.
Redirects
Up to 3. Each new address is checked before we go there, and a redirect into a skipped shop ends the visit.
Time limit
6 seconds, then it gives up.
Page size
HTML only. We work with at most 1 MB of it, however long the page is.
Photo
The picture the page names as the product image is downloaded to make the card’s own copy — also when it sits on another host. Files over 5 MB are dropped.
Errors
An error status or a refused connection ends the visit on the spot. A new card then waits for its owner to fill it in; an existing one keeps what it had.
robots.txt
Not fetched and not read. The form at the top of this page is how you keep the card maker out.

What ends up on the card

The product details taken from the page — name, brand, description, price and earlier price, currency, stock status, category and listed attributes — and the page address. Each price change is added to a price history. The photo is stored as our own copy and shown on the wall. The HTML of the page isn’t stored.
